Capture Reflection 4

We talked about the correct way to make a lesson plan. The thing most of us did wrong on the lessons plan we made was that we did not actually make the plan with times expected to complete the tasks we planned. The Gong book says if you want to learn and want your students to learn they have to teach what they have learned to some one else.

Vista Jr. High Shop teacher

The classes were arranged with the shop and the class room next to each other, but you had to go out into the hall way to get from one to another. The class room had lots of cool rocket and plane pics on the wall and in general was a very cool place.

Students and teacher were excited and energetic, but under control. The students seemed to me more under control than last weeks class, even thought they were enen larger, aprox. 40 students. The class was making solar ovens.

One area of improvement may be to have the student who are finished help the one who are not.

The teaching for this project was guided practice.

I would have taught the class just as I observed it being taught.

Overall I had a great impression and I'm excited to teach myself in a similar environment.

Capture Reflection 3

Teaching on Tuesday was more organized with a lesson plan and as a result I was able to ensure that the teaching goal was met.

Jess Carter had his class arranged with 4 tables in the center of the room. The shop had work benches with tools on the walls.

Students and teacher were excited and energetic, but under control. The class was finishing water rockets.

One area of improvement may be to have the student who are finished help the one who are not.

Capture Reflection #2

From Reading Wong:
Beg, borrow steal ideas from the best teachers. The way to have a successful classroom is to ensure that you have procedures so that the students know what is expected of them and how to succeed.

The three areas of educational is Psychology are: Behaviorism, Constructivism, and Cognitivism.

There are several different Educational Psychologists that fit under these categories and several different teaching styles that fit under these categories that will need to be memorized.

Reflection on Teach Something 1 Safety wire.

Taught how to use safety wire tool to twist safety wire.

I planned to teach how to use safety wire. I did a poor job performing my own instructor responsibilities steps. In the future I will make sure that I am very specific about what is going to be taught and then teach it.

I graded myself as a 3.5

The students would be able to perform the task, but didn't know why it is important or how it applies.

Personal Teaching and Learning Philosophy

I learn and instruct best when teaching follows this simple pattern.

Instructor Responsibilities:

1. Summarize what should be learned.
2. Teach in detail what is to be taught.
3. Summarize and reinforce again what should have been learned.
4. Help student’s practice or review what was to be learned.
5. Test student’s understanding or skills.
6. Provide feedback so student knows how they are doing.
7. Repeat 1-6 until student reaches learning goal.

Student Responsibilities

1. Prepare as required.
2. Note important points during lesson.
3. Practice or review with instructor.
4. Keep asking for help until learning goal reached.

Teachers and students need to be on the same team working together everyday toward a common and very specific goal that follows the teaching pattern noted above.

The combination of all of these daily, weekly, and monthly goals taken together over the course of the semester will bring the student to the overall learning goal.

There are teachers and instructors:

Teachers understand their job to be one of presenting information. Teachers feel that once the information has been presented the only thing they need to do is test and assign grades. Teachers take no responsibility to ensure that the learning goal is met. Teachers always end up with a “top 10%” and then everyone else. They view learning as something the student is entirely responsible for.

Instructors understand that their job is not just to present the information but ensure that the students meet the learning goal. Instructors end up with a “top 90%” and the only students who are not successful are the students who refuse to be helped or quit. They view learning a something that the instructor can greatly influence. Its really easy to spot a good instructor, they have 90% A’s not 10%.

Fruit:  students learn differently and we need to teach using different styles to help everyone.

Tramp:  Teach by having a goal and then let activity reinforce it.

Oreo:  Activities are fun, but there needs to be teaching and a goal.

Family Pics: 1. Deliberatly Imply what is to be learned. 2. Model it.  3. Praise

Assess: to grade
Evaluate:  how hard they try/ product, effort and growth
